The Uttarakhand government has announced the much-awaited support price for sugarcane this year as well, at Rs 210 per quintal for normal and Rs 215 per quintal for early high variety of the sugarcane, which is highest in the country, Sugarcane Minister Madan Kaushik said here.
As indicated earlier, the state government has kept the prices once again higher than neighbouring Uttar Pradesh which has recently declared its sugarcane support price this year for unapproved variety (Rs 200 per quintal), normal (205 per qtl), and early variety (Rs 210 per qtl).
Last year, the support price last year was also highest at Rs 192-197, as compared to Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab.
Mr Kaushik said all the sugar mills were given strict instructions that the support price should be displayed prominently.
He also added that the mill owners have been told to clear the payments to farmers within a week.
Around 1.5 farmers were linked to sugarcane productions in the state and the due to increased prices last year, the area under sugarcane production which had been declining for a few years is reported to have increased to 104776 ha in 2010-2011 from last year's 93018 ha.
The good news for sugarcane farmers could be a bitter pill for sugar mills in the state which are already under debt of over 249 crores, experts here said.
